With “a voice like a beacon of hope” (Seattle Times), vocalist Jimmie Herrod brings singular power and expressivity to his globe-trotting career as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer on stage and screen. Herrod first came to worldwide prominence as a finalist on the NBC nationally broadcast television show, “America’s Got Talent,” earning the rare “Golden Buzzer” recognition from actress Sofia Vergara, and returning the following year on the “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars” series.

As a solo artist, Herrod has appeared to critical and audience acclaim with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and with the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Houston, and Oregon. Cédric Hanriot is a pianist, composer, arranger, sound designer, and music producer. Winner of prestigious scholarships and international awards, he is known worldwide for his collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Terri Lyne Carrington, Robert Glasper, Donny McCaslin, and other big names in the jazz world.

Cédric Hanriot served as pianist and sound designer on Dianne Reeves’s album “Beautiful Life,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2015. 

In 2022, Cédric Hanriot released his last album, “Time is Color”, under his label Morphosis Arts, created in 2019. “Time is Color” is a singular work, a powerful mixture of jazz, hip-hop, and urban music – an album that resembles himself. The album has been the subject of several glowing reviews (Le Monde, Blues and Soul Magazine, The Jazz Shows with Jamie Cullum, among others). The album was quickly voted CHOC by Jazz Magazine, 5 stars by BBC Magazine, and ranked among the ten best albums of the year 2022 by the English magazine MOJO.

GRAMMY-nominated music educator Coty Raven Morris is a proud alumna of Texas State University- San Marcos and Michigan State University, where she received a Master’s in Choral Conducting.

At Portland State University, Coty is Professor of Choir, Music Education, and Social Justice. She is also the Founder of Being Human Together, a community rooted in music education striving to normalize difficult topics through conversation and connection. Prior to this, she was the Director of Choirs at Crosby High School in the Houston area and has served as the Outreach Choir Director at the MSU Community Music School and Music Director at Grand Ledge United Methodist Church.

Coty was recently named a Quarter-finalist for the 2023 Music Educators Grammy! She was also nominated for the coveted Portland State University George C Hoffman Faculty Award.

Leb Borgerson is a multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Eastern Washington. After moving to Portland in 2000, he performed with several popular local bands, recorded numerous records, and toured the Western United States. Leb is the bass player for the well-loved Portland cumbia act Orquestra Pacifico Tropical. As a freelance producer, Leb has written, recorded, and produced over 150 original compositions for multiple production companies.

While studying music composition and guitar performance at Washington State University, he was a DJ on the college radio station KZUU. Outside of work, Leb continues to write and perform music and enjoys spending time with his wife and dog, as well as cooking and traveling.

Crispy Chicken & Waffles by Chef Norma Buchholz

Waffles:

• 2 cups flour
• 1 ¾ cups milk
• ½ cup melted butter
• 2 tbsp sugar
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• 4 tsp baking powder
• ½ tsp salt
• 2 tsp vanilla
• 2 eggs, separated (egg whites beaten until stiff peaks form)

1. Place the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder in a large bowl, and mix well.
2. Add vanilla, butter, milk, and egg yolks. Mix well.
3. Using a spatula, gently fold in the egg whites until well incorporated.
4. Turn your waffle iron on to medium heat and place 1 cup of waffle batter in the iron, close and cook 1-2 minutes.
5. Gently remove and let cool before plating.

Chicken:

• 1 qt buttermilk
• 3 tbsp kosher salt
• 2 lbs chicken tenderloin
• 2 cups flour
• 1 tbsp paprika
• 1 tsp cayenne
• 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper
• 3 large eggs

1. In a large bowl, mix together buttermilk and 2 tablespoons salt.
2. Add chicken and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to overnight.
3. When ready to fry: Fill a Dutch oven fitted with a candy thermometer with vegetable oil 2″ to 3″ deep, then heat until oil reaches 300º.
4. Prepare one sheet pan lined with paper towels and a wire rack.

Part 1: Venturing into the Unknown

Music has always been an anchor for me.

Whether I’m tickling the keys of the piano, bowing or plucking my cello, or listening to recorded tracks or live performances, music serves as a constant; a place of refuge, comfort, joy, emotion, and trusted companionship.

My connection to music is especially important when life takes turns toward the unexpected—and it certainly did when I took a monumental leap into the unknown, and relocated to Tel Aviv, Israel in December 2021!

This transition was a big surprise to everyone in my life—including me. For the previous 10 years, I’d established a life in Portland as a performing pianist, teacher, and entrepreneur. I’d played as a concerto soloist with the Seattle Philharmonic and Olympia Symphony, performed at venues such as the Keller Auditorium and the Portland Art Museum, and collaborated with many of the Pacific Northwest’s finest multi-genre musicians as founder of Connections Concert Series. I’d recorded my first full-length solo piano CD, worked as resident recording artist with Classic Pianos, and played several thrilling Thursdays @ Three programs right here on All Classical Portland.

“I am deeply honored that All Classical Portland has chosen me and my uncommon instrument,” says Maggie. “I am filled with excitement for everything this position entails. This residency is significant for me because with it, I will grow as an artist and have the chance to share the beauty of classical music. I am particularly looking forward to showcasing solo double bass music with the wider music community.”

“All Classical Portland has always felt like a friend; a friend to the artist, a friend to the community,” shares García in a new video interview. “One of the wonderful things about the station is that it is so community-centered. The station recognizes that to build community, you have to build from within, tapping the resources of the community to bring people together.”

Here, we’ll explore a few wonderful pieces, the genius composers behind the scenes, and the habit that makes us all human.

Don Giovanni, or “Up-Until-Dawn” Giovanni?

Don Giovanni is often considered one of Mozart’s greatest achievements, as well as the hymn of procrastination. Written as a two-act opera, it premiered on October 29, 1787, in Prague – fourteen days after it was supposed to premiere for the visit of Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria.

But despite Mozart receiving those extra fourteen days to make last-minute edits and twiddle his thumbs, he didn’t compose the score until the morning before production. A popular story claims that during the eve of the premier, Mozart was chatting and enjoying beverages with his wife Constanze. Afterward, he fell asleep, and Constanze kindly woke him up at five o’clock in the morning to finish the overture. When the opera was finally performed, the ink on the sheet music of the overture was wet, still drying from last-minute copying. Musicians sight-read their parts without rehearsal.

Even with the lack of previous practice, the premiere was well-received. The Provincialnachrichten of Vienna reported that “Mozart conducted in person…” and that he was “…welcomed joyously and jubilantly by the numerous gathering.”

The Thieving Magpie

Two-act operas tend to be a common struggle for procrastinating composers. Gioachino Rossini enjoyed setting new standards through his many serious and comic operas, but he may have pushed the limits a bit too far when he composed La Gazza Ladra, “The Thieving Magpie,” on the day of the opera’s opening.

A popular anecdote reports that Rossini was locked inside the attic of La Scala, the Milan theater of the opera’s premiere, by the theater manager. Rossini was instructed to write the opera, page by page, and drop them out of the window for copyists to quickly transcribe. If he didn’t finish them fast enough, stagehands were encouraged to throw him out of the window instead. Sometimes, we all need a bit of motivation, and Rossini was no exception.
