{"id":77182,"date":"2021-02-08T09:22:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T17:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.allclassical.org\/?page_id=77182"},"modified":"2025-01-10T11:45:51","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T19:45:51","slug":"values-and-commitment-statement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.allclassical.org\/about\/values-and-commitment-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Values and Commitment Statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>June 2020<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is moments like these that compel us to consider all of the ways we are using our public media platform to serve our diverse communities, and to be clear about All Classical Radio&#8217;s values: to <strong>listen deeply<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>amplify all voices<\/strong>; to\u00a0<strong>embrace equity<\/strong>; to\u00a0<strong>build trust<\/strong>, and to\u00a0<strong>be accountable<\/strong>\u00a0in our mission to\u00a0<strong>provide access to the\u00a0arts for all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In a pre-pandemic world, May 23rd would have been the day All Classical Radio broadcast the world premiere of Damien Geter\u2019s <em>An African American Requiem<\/em> live from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon. This groundbreaking work, which was commissioned by Resonance Ensemble and to be co-presented with the Oregon Symphony, memorializes the Black lives lost to racial violence\u2014from the founding of our country, to Eric Garner\u2019s death in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>This is not political. This is human. All Classical Radio condemns racism in all forms and across all sectors of society. We believe that <strong>Black Lives Matter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The artist Nadia Fawad once said, \u201cArt reflects the innermost realities of humanity.\u201d Through the music played on All Classical Radio, we put forth an opportunity to understand the truths of our shared humanity. In addition to beauty and comfort, the music we share provides a powerful vehicle for reflection, grieving, and growth.<\/p>\n<p>The classical music industry has historically marginalized the voices of Black people, Indigenous people, and People of Color. We are committed to changing the narrative of our industry.<\/p>\n<p>While public\u00a0declarations\u00a0are important\u00a0and\u00a0meaningful, we believe in doing the work.\u00a0Lasting change requires action\u00a0and commitment.<\/p>\n<p>We have a responsibility to continue to expand access and share diverse perspectives, ensuring that the voices of those historically underrepresented and those often excluded today have a place at the microphone, in the office, at the Board table, on the stage, and in the concert hall.<\/p>\n<p>Here are\u00a0some of the\u00a0actions we\u00a0have\u00a0taken\u00a0and are taking\u00a0to\u00a0drive\u00a0change:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amplify\u00a0Black artists, issues,\u00a0and voices <\/strong>through programs like\u00a0<em>Where We Live<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The\u00a0State of the Arts<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Thursdays @ Three<\/em>, as well as the Artists in Residence program. In addition to programming and initiatives that amplifies Black voices in particular, All Classical Radio is also committed to expanding opportunity, access, and visibility to the broader Indigenous communities and to People of Color.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Address\u00a0the industry-wide shortage of broadcast-quality\u00a0recordings\u00a0of works\u00a0by underrepresented composers.<\/strong> Once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, we will partner to produce high-quality studio recordings ourselves through All Classical Radio&#8217;s Recording Inclusivity Project. In the meantime, All Classical Radio has a dedicated team of music researchers working to unearth lesser-known pieces and recordings of works \u202fby composers of color, creating a resource list that can be shared with other stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expand youth access to music and mentorship.<\/strong>\u00a0In 2017, we launched our JOY! Program (Joyous Outreach to Youth\/You) dedicated to equity and inclusivity. The four pillars of the program include (1) Youth Roving Reporters, an arts journalism mentorship program for high-school students;\u00a0(2)\u00a0<em>Where We Live<\/em>,\u00a0a radio segment dedicated to the intersection of art and social issues;\u00a0(3)\u00a0an Artists\u00a0in Residence Program; and\u00a0(4)\u00a0ICAN (the <a href=\"https:\/\/icanradio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Children\u2019s Arts Network<\/a>),\u00a0launched\u00a0in\u00a0April 2019. ICAN is a station for children designed to expand cross-cultural awareness and to promote\u00a0empathy and\u00a0emotional literacy.
